The Swaminarayan religion was founded by Sahajanand Swami, a.k.a. Bhagvan Shree Swaminarayan, over the period from 1781 to 1830. Bhagvan Shree Swaminarayan was born in a small village named Chhapaiya near Ayodhya, in North India. His devotees believe He is an incarnation of Sri Krishna.
After studying the scriptures in depth, He left home at the age of 11 for a strenuous seven-year pilgrimage through Nepal and Eastern and Southern India, ultimately settling down in the Western state of Gujarat.

It houses of Three thousand personal objects of Swaminarayan, who is believed to be a manifestation of god in Swaminarayan Hinduism.

There is a saying in Gujarat that dialects change every 12 villages. In a similar manner, the style of turbans changes region-to-region. While it is rare to see people wearing turbans regularly nowadays, during the time of Shree Hari, Gujarati men-folk styled their turbans and topis according to their region, and gifted Him with such turbans and topis. Shreeji Maharaj was Himself adept at tying different styles of turban. The poet saints have described in detail Shreeji Maharaj’s turbans and topis in their kirtans. Numerous turbans and topis adorned by Shree Hari are displayed in the Museum’s halls.
